South Pasadena (2-0) extended a 7-3 halftime lead to 21-3 with two touchdowns within a 1-minute 11-second span after Hoover lost defensive backs Toan Huynh and Ubaldo Mata in the third period.

“I thought we played real hard defense, but anytime you lose two starters, it makes a difference,” Hoover Coach Dennis Hughes said. “Those two quick touchdowns really killed us.”

Magana bolted in from five yards to culminate a six-minute, 59-yard drive to increase the lead to 14-3 with 3:41 left in the third quarter.

The Tigers stopped Hoover (0-2) on downs on the ensuing series and Magana scored on a 50-yard run to give South Pasadena a 21-3 lead.

Hoover quarterback Nathan Dishington completed seven of 10 passes for 58 yards.

Hoover scored on a 21-yard field goal by Joby Lewis with 5:59 left in the first half.
