Tournament to Benefit Conejo Golf Programs

Share

The Friends of Conejo Golf, a booster club formed to support financially strapped golf programs at Westlake, Newbury Park and Thousand Oaks highs, will hold its first fund-raising tournament Oct. 21 at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village.

The tournament will benefit the golf programs at the three schools, which annually produce some of the best golf talent in the region. Because of a budget shortfall, funding for the district’s golf programs and attendant coaching positions were eliminated from the Conejo Valley Unified School District budget last spring.

The programs were reinstated by the board with the understanding that the golf teams must become self-sufficient.

O.J. Ojomoh, a Cal State Northridge inside linebacker, was honored as Western Football Conference player of the week after making a school-record 22 tackles Saturday in a 17-10 loss to Cal State Fullerton. Ojomoh’s tackle total, along with those of several players, was increased after the game was reviewed on film. The 6-foot-1, 218-pound junior from Riverside College was credited with seven solo tackles and 15 assisted tackles for a team-leading three-game total of 42. Ojomoh’s effort against the Titans broke the CSUN single-game record of 20 shared by Vic Batastini (in 1973 against Hawaii) and Mark Dozier (in 1986 against Cal Lutheran).

Nigel Bostic of Valley College has been named the Western State Conference co-offensive player of the week, along with William Jarrett of L. A. Southwest.

Bostic, a 6-foot-3, 240-pound sophomore tailback from South Park High in New York, gained 80 yards in 11 carries and scored two touchdowns in the Monarchs’ 27-20 nonconference loss to Antelope Valley on Saturday night. Bostic also had two receptions for 48 yards.

Jarrett rushed for 53 yards in 11 carries, caught two passes for 28 yards and scored a touchdown in Southwest’s 36-29 loss to Citrus.

Don Green, the former Cal Lutheran track coach, was honored by National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics officials, who recognized his 21 years at Cal Lutheran at a ceremony Sunday that drew more than 200 coaches and athletic directors.

In 1970, Green inherited a program that had never won a dual meet. After the Kingsmen lost their first meet, they embarked on a 98-meet winning streak that spanned 15 seasons. In addition, Green has coached 44 NAIA All-Americans.

The award carries special meaning for Green, whose 21-year association with the school ended acrimoniously last spring. The 71-year-old coach said the school forced him into retirement, prompting him to file an age-discrimination claim with the state Department of Fair Employment and Housing, which is investigating his charges against the school.

“This is one of the best awards I’ve had,” Green said. “It means a lot to come from my colleagues. We appreciated this immensely and it feels especially nice because of all that’s happened.”

Victoria Herazo of Newhall won The Athletics Congress 5K race-walk championships in Raleigh, N. C., on Saturday. Herazo, 32, timed 22 minutes 42.1 seconds over the five-kilometer course at Research Triangle Park, falling just short of the national record of 22:32.
