COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UC Irvine Beats Stanford in Water Polo
UC Irvine defeated Stanford, 12-9, in a nonconference water polo game between two of the top five ranked teams in the nation Friday in Palo Alto.
Skylar Putman had three goals for fourth-ranked Irvine (6-1), which opened a 6-1 lead at the half. Pablo Yrizar, Steve Gill, Steve Froning and Kurt Edler scored two each for Irvine, which plays top-ranked California today. No. 5-ranked Stanford is 3-4.
In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:
UC Santa Barbara 3, UC Irvine 0--The Anteaters (3-5, 0-2) had only 12 kills as a team in a 15-2, 15-2, 15-1 loss to the Gauchos (8-2, 3-0) in Santa Barbara.
Cal State Long Beach 3, Cal State Fullerton 0--The Titans (5-12, 1-3) got 12 kills from Stephanie Scofield in the loss at Long Beach.
In nonconference women’s volleyball:
Cal State Fullerton 3, Seton Hall 0--Becky Howlett had 12 kills, Rachel Wittliff nine and Stephanie Shrieve eight as Cal State Fullerton won 15-4, 15-5, 15-0 at Cal State Long Beach. Seton Hall is 7-6.
At the Angelo State women’s volleyball tournament:
Chapman 3, Florida Southern 1--Heather Mead had 21 kills and 20 digs and Debi Waller had 20 kills, 15 digs and three blocks for Chapman.
