SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The South Bay entries did not fare so well in the second annual Redondo-Mira Costa Power Volleyball Classic girls’ tournament.

Mira Costa High was sixth in the 12-team field, Bishop Montgomery eighth, and Peninsula, South Torrance and Redondo finished in the bottom three spots.

In the championship game Saturday at the Redondo High gym, Lakewood St. Joseph defeated Corona del Mar in five sets.

Behind a reputation forged from two national titles, three state titles and eight CIF championships, Mira Costa came into the tournament ranked No. 1 in the Southern Section 5-A Division.

The Mustangs (5-2) started strong, defeating South, 15-5, 17-15, but were then dumped into the consolation bracket by Newport Harbor.

Mira Costa rebounded with a victory over El Modena, then dropped a five-set match to Long Beach Poly for fifth place.

In that game, the Mustangs crawled back from six points down to tie the score, 13-13, then lost on two consecutive unforced errors.

Bishop Montgomery defeated Redondo, 15-13, 5-15, 15-6, then lost two quick games to San Diego Torrey Pines. The Knights extended Long Beach Poly to five games before losing and lost in four games to El Modena.

Peninsula salvaged a victory by defeating Redondo, 15-7, 15-13, 15-13. The host Sea Hawks came close a few times, but still failed to win even one game in the tournament.
