Mother Pleads Not Guilty to Slayings of 2 Sons

A 25-year-old Monterey Park woman pleaded not guilty this week to charges that she stabbed her two sons to death in their apartment when she was apparently distraught over a failed romance and financial problems, authorities said.

Diana Covarrubias has been charged with two counts of murder in the deaths of her sons, Steven Killeen, 6, and Jeffrey Hernandez, 2. A pretrial hearing will be held Nov. 1 in Alhambra Municipal Court, said Los Angeles County Deputy Dist. Atty. Richard Taklender. If convicted, she could face the death penalty, Taklender said.

Covarrubias’ parents and Monterey Park police said that she was depressed about her breakup with the father of her younger son, and had recently discovered that the father was involved in a relationship with another woman. They said that she also was having financial problems.
