A Los Angeles police officer shot and killed an 18-year-old man Monday after after the man shot another officer who had just made an undercover drug buy, authorities said.

Two other suspects, who were not immediately identified, were taken into custody following the incident at an apartment building near 114th Street and Towne Avenue at about 4 p.m., police said. Paramedics took the officer, whose name was not released, to Daniel Freeman Memorial Hospital in Inglewood for treatment of a leg wound.

Investigators said the officer bought rock cocaine from two suspects at the top of a stairwell and was shot immediately after the transaction. “As soon as the exchange was made, one of the suspects produced a handgun and a shootout occurred with the officer,” said Lt. William Hall, head of the LAPD’s officer-involved shooting team.
