Moorpark’s Turner Earns WSC Honor

Tailback Johnel Turner of Moorpark College has been honored as a Western State Conference tri-offensive player of the week.

Turner, a sophomore from Oxnard High, gained 203 yards in 18 carries and scored three touchdowns in the Raiders’ 23-20 victory over visiting Santa Monica on Saturday.

West L. A. quarterback Roman Foster and Santa Barbara City wide receiver Scott Arnold also were selected as tri-offensive players of the week.

The first Cal State Northridge basketball tip-off dinner will be held Sunday at the Warner Center Marriott. Cocktails will be served at 5:30 p.m., and the dinner will start at 6.

UCLA basketball Coach Jim Harrick is the featured speaker.

Rio Mesa’s 1971 Southern Section A Division championship football team will serve as grand marshal at the Spartans’ homecoming football game Nov. 1 against Dos Pueblos.

The Spartans finished 10-2 in 1971 and won their only Southern Section football title.

Rio Mesa assistant coach George Contreras said the school is having difficulty contacting several players on the 1971 team and encouraged them to call him at 805-385-2712 or 805-482-1839.

Leonard Baker, an All-Southern Section running back who rushed for 1,121 yards in 1971, is among the players who will attend the anniversary.
