One airliner struck another as they taxied Wednesday night at Newark International Airport, and 12 people were slightly injured as passengers slid down emergency chutes, officials said.

Preliminary reports indicated the right wing of a Continental Airlines Boeing 737 hit the left wing of an American Airlines MD-80, said Ned Walker, a spokesman for Continental Airlines.

The accident occurred shortly after the planes landed, said Port Authority Sgt. Stephen Prospero. Engines were shut down after the crash, and there was no fire, he said. The airport was closed for a short time.
