TENNIS

Third-seeded Jose Luis Noriega of the University of San Diego was upset by 12th-ranked Daniel Courcol of Mississippi State, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, in the first round of the Volvo Tennis Collegiate Championships in Austin, Tex.

The championships are the second leg of the collegiate grand slams. Noriega, who is 25-9 in grand slam events, was playing with a pulled stomach muscle. His injury forced him and Kevin Bradley to withdraw from the 16-team doubles draw.

Joe McDonough of San Diego State upset 27th-ranked Woody Webb of North Carolina, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, in three hours and seven minutes. McDonough, ranked 55th, saved two match points in the third set. He will play top-seeded Alex O’Brien of Stanford this morning at 10:30.

BASEBALL

The Padres officially announced the hiring of Reggie Waller, 36, as the team’s director of scouting. Waller, who lives in El Cajon, is the franchise’s first minority executive.

Waller “has spent a great deal of time in the game as a player, scout, manager and executive,” Padre General Manager Joe McIlvaine said. “We feel comfortable putting our future in his hands as he secures talent on the amateur level. It is the most important aspect of baseball operations.”
