Angel Cordero dismounted from Don’t Cross The Law in typical fashion Thursday at Belmont Park, bolting up and from the saddle.

This time, the 48-year-old jockey hit the ground as a winner for the 7,000th time, a milestone previously reached only by Bill Shoemaker and Laffit Pincay.

The victory came in the featured $29,000 Beau Purple Purse on a rainy day. Don’t Cross The Law, a 3-year-old gelding, was Cordero’s seventh and last mount of the day.

Cordero shook hands all around and kissed Don’t Cross The Law’s nose, which did not figure in the outcome of the race since the winning margin was 4 1/2 lengths.

Shoemaker retired in 1990 with 8,883 victories. Pincay, 45, is still riding and has more than 7,400 winners.
