“To each his own” could well describe the offensive philosophies of the football teams at Ventura and Hart highs.

Ventura, which runs a ground-based attack, ranks first among area Southern Section teams in total offense with an average of 398.7 yards a game; pass-oriented Hart is second at 393.7.

Ventura has accounted for 1,757 of its 2,392 yards on the ground; Hart has passed for 1,878 of its 2,362 yards.

Scoring: Thousand Oaks running back Cory Bowen has scored 26 rushing touchdowns in more than two seasons, two short of Mark Monestime’s school record set from 1985-87. Bowen is five touchdowns shy of Monestime’s career record of touchdowns with 31. . . .

Westlake, which has been shut out in two of its past three games, has failed to score in nine of its past 12 quarters. . . . Fourteen players have scored for Royal. . . . Monroe tailback Sean Bell has scored seven of the Vikings’ nine touchdowns. . . .

Reseda kicker Gerald Cohl has booted a field goal in each of his team’s five games. Cohl, an All-City Section selection last year as a sophomore, has connected on kicks of 41, 38, 28, 27 and 25 yards. He has 22 points. . . .

Oak Park’s Jeff Gibbons is a study in versatility. Gibbons, a senior, has caught 18 passes for 306 yards and six touchdowns, made 15 of 15 extra-point attempts and booted field goals of 36, 37 and 42 yards. Gibbons has scored 60 points. . . .

After a streak in which he made only one of seven point-after attempts, Rio Mesa kicker McLane Hansen has hit four in a row.

Rushing: Thousand Oaks has 1,922 rushing yards through six games and is on track to eclipse the 1971 school record of 3,385 yards. The Lancers, who are averaging 320 rushing yards a game, averaged 282 in 1971. . . .

Channel Islands’ David Cox carried 18 times for 201 yards in the Raiders’ 48-21 loss to Thousand Oaks on Friday. Cox had rushed for only 351 yards in the previous five games. . . .

Hueneme entered its game Friday with only 89 rushing yards but nearly matched that total with a season-high 73 in 19 carries during a 28-14 loss to Rio Mesa.

Passing: Royal quarterback Ryan Fien averages one touchdown for every nine passes. His touchdown-to-interception ratio is 12 to 1. . . . Oxnard quarterback Larry Bumpus has thrown for more than 240 yards in each of the Yellowjackets’ past four games. . . .

Rio Mesa quarterback Andy Contreras set a school passing-percentage record Friday when he completed all nine passes in a 28-14 win over Hueneme. Contreras has completed 65% (40 of 62) of his passes. . . .

Glendale quarterback Nathan Callister had his best game of the season Friday against Crescenta Valley, completing 10 of 14 for a season-high 229 yards and four touchdowns. Callister had passed for just 445 yards and three touchdowns in five previous games.

Receiving: Royal’s Ryan Campbell caught a 63-yard touchdown pass in the Highlanders’ 32-14 win over Newbury Park on Friday. Campbell had not caught a pass all season. . . .

Rio Mesa receiver Don DiDomizio caught four passes for 111 yards in the Spartans’ 28-14 win over Hueneme on Friday. He had caught only one pass for 11 yards entering the game. . . . Eight receivers have caught at least one pass for Simi Valley.

Defense: Sylmar (4-1), which shut out its fourth (Canoga Park), fifth (Van Nuys) and sixth (Birmingham) opponents last season, has posted shutouts the past two weeks, in the fourth and fifth weeks of the season. A shutout against Monroe on Friday would equal the 1990 feat. . . .

Glendale has allowed only 13 points in the past five games. The Dynamiters have recorded three shutouts in that period.

Extra points: Friday’s Marmonte League game between Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks will feature the league’s most and least successful programs, historically speaking. Thousand Oaks leads with 77 league wins and Simi Valley leads with 84 league losses. . . . Royal’s 6-0 record represents the best start in school history. . . .

Quartz Hill’s 14-13 win over Canyon last week was the Rebels’ ninth consecutive Golden League win dating to 1989. Quartz Hill’s last league loss came against Canyon (28-0) in the second week of league play in 1989. . . .

Newbury Park’s six losses have come against opponents with a combined record of 31-5. . . . Camarillo’s 21-0 victory over Westlake last week was the Scorpions’ fourth in 11 meetings between the schools.

Buena’s Scott Baxter set a school record when he recovered three fumbles in the Bulldogs’ 31-28 win over Oxnard on Friday. . . . Grant (2-4) has scored in just two games this season and has won each time.
