The San Diego Police Department is asking for the public’s help in identifying a young Latina who was found unconscious Sunday in the center divider of Interstate 5.

A California Highway Patrol officer found the woman at 4 a.m. in the northbound lanes near Dairy Mart Road, San Diego police spokesman Bill Robinson said. The woman carried no identification.

She was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center, where doctors determined that a wound on her face was not from a shotgun as they originally suspected, but from the blow of a blunt object, possibly a side-view mirror, Robinson said. The woman is unconscious and on life support at the hospital.

Police speculated that she might be an illegal immigrant who was hit trying to cross the freeway. She is 5 feet tall, weighs 90 pounds and is 16 to 22 years old. She has curly, shoulder-length hair, which is dark brown. She also has brown eyes, and both of her ears have been pierced three times.

Anyone who knows the identity of the woman is asked to call the San Diego Police Department.
