Glendale College, paced by individual victories from Hugo Allan Garcia and Grace Padilla, clinched the Western State Conference men’s and women’s cross-country titles in the conference final at Arroyo Verde Park in Ventura on Tuesday.

The competition was the third WSC meet this season. The first two meets each counted 25% toward the team title, with Tuesday’s meet counting for 50%.

Garcia, the defending state champion, timed 20 minutes 27 seconds over the four-mile course to record his first win in four races this season. Teammate Robert Nelson finished second in 20:58 as Glendale won the men’s title with 20 points. Bakersfield was second with 79 points, followed by Moorpark with 81.

Padilla won the women’s race in 20:29 over the 5,000 meter-course to lead the Vaqueros to a 33-33 tie with Moorpark. But Glendale won the title because it finished higher overall (first and second) than Moorpark (fifth and second) in the first two WSC meets.

Deana Fuess and Heidi Ullman finished second (21:02) and third (21:12) for Moorpark.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Canyon d. Palmdale 15-7, 15-4, 15-9--Palmdale caught Canyon’s attention by winning a game from the Cowboys in the first round of Golden League play. So when the teams met in a rematch Tuesday, it was pay-back time.

“In a way, it was kind of revenge,” said Canyon middle blocker Danika Frandsen, who had seven kills and five blocks. “We had to make up for that game we lost.”

Canyon (11-0, 7-0 in league play) showed its versatility against Palmdale (4-6, 1-6), as four players had six or more kills. Outside hitter Juli Mosier led the attack with 14 kills, while outside hitter Lisa Brussard joined Frandsen with seven kills.

Middle blocker Gina Sanchez had just six kills on a night when most of the sets went to the outside, but she sparked Canyon from the service line with three of Canyon’s 12 aces. Canyon, which is just one win away from its eighth league title, also received an outstanding performance from setter Melysa Wilcox, who had 27 assists, four kills and an ace.
