OJAI : Fire Does $45,000 in Damage to House

A fire sparked by deteriorated wiring tore through a rented house on Ojai-Santa Paula Road in Ojai on Thursday, causing $45,000 in damage, county fire dispatcher Rhonda Roller said.

Three Ventura County Fire Department engines responded to the 5:28 p.m. call to the house, owned by Greg Thayer of Ventura, and had the fire out by 6:15 p.m., fire officials said.

They determined that the fire started in wiring between a bedroom and bathroom.

The blaze caused $40,000 damage to the $100,000 brick structure, and $5,000 damage to its contents, Roller said.

Thayer received a county weed abatement notice earlier this year, and trimmed the oak trees lining the narrow road leading to his house, Roller said.

If that had not been done, she said, it would have been difficult for the fire engines to get through.

Thayer’s tenant, who was not identified, was not home when the fire broke out.

No one was injured.
