Roskelly’s 5 Touchdowns Pace Valencia : Prep football: A 50-17 rout of Brea avenges last season’s disappointing loss.

This year, there would be no second-half comeback by the Brea-Olinda High School football team.

Valencia running back Ryan Roskelly wouldn’t stand for it.

Valencia blew a two-touchdown halftime lead last season, but Roskelly made sure it wouldn’t happen again, scoring four of his five touchdowns in the second half for a 50-17 Orange League victory in front of a crowd of 7,000 at Brea.

Roskelly, a senior who missed last year’s game with an ankle injury, dominated the second half, scoring all of Valencia’s four touchdowns.

He scored on runs of 13, 11 and 10 yards in the third quarter and returned an interception 84 yards for a touchdown as Valencia, ranked third in Orange County, avenged last year’s 23-21 loss to eighth-ranked Brea.

Roskelly, who also scored on a 15-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, finished with 118 yards in 16 carries.

“That’s the best game Ryan has played,” Valencia Coach Mike Marrujo said. “No question about it.”

Valencia (8-0, 3-0) raced to a 16-0 first quarter lead, scoring on each of their first three possessions:

--A 28-yard field goal by Scott Dodgionn that was set up by a 25-yard interception return by Korey Alexander.

--A 13-yard touchdown pass from Marc O’Brien to Kevin Alexander.

--The 15-yard touchdown run by Roskelly.

Roskelly capped the score with a stutter-step dance at the Brea one, then stepping over the goal-line just before Brea defenders reached him. He was whistled for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

“It was all adrenalin,” Roskelly said of the dance.

Marrujo wasn’t pleased with the move, which appeared to motivate a brief comeback by Brea in the second quarter.

“We don’t coach that here,” Marrujo said. “Ryan just got excited. He’s a good kid who got carried away.”

After almost allowing the lead to slip away, Valencia’s defense buckled down late in the second quarter.

Trailing, 16-10, Brea drove to the Valencia 30, where Jason Luevanos dropped back to pass with 52 seconds left in the quarter.

His throw, intended for Jaime Baraglia, was intercepted at the 29 by Valencia defensive back Jason Seceda, who returned it 71 yards for a touchdown. O’Brien’s two-point conversion pass to Korey Alexander gave Valencia a 24-10 lead.

Brea--sparked by completions of 16 and 17 yards by Luevanos and a 13-yard pass from Marco Hernandez to Luevanos on a fake field goal--marched to the Valencia 10 with one second left. But Hernandez’s 27-yard field goal attempt was blocked by sophomore Chris Draft and recovered by Bradd Runge.

Luevanos completed 21 of 33 passes for 262 yards, but was intercepted three times.
