SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

El Dorado running back Bryan Warner rushed for 258 yards and three touchdowns Friday night to lead the Hawks to a 27-7 Empire League victory over Cypress at Western High School.

Warner, a junior, has rushed for at least 100 yards in seven of El Dorado’s eight games. Against the Centurions, he carried the ball 29 times and helped break open a close game with two second-half touchdowns.

El Dorado (5-3, 2-1) opened the scoring with 4 minutes 18 seconds left in the first quarter on Warner’s 22-yard run. Cypress (2-6, 0-3) tied the score on a one-yard run by quarterback Gabe Garcia that capped a 12-play, 45-yard drive. The score was 7-7 at halftime.

The Hawks took a 14-7 lead on Warner’s second touchdown, a 20-yard run with 6:46 left in the third quarter.

El Dorado quarterback Jim Beck completed only one pass, but it was a 34-yard screen pass to Spenser Frost for a touchdown to make it 21-7 with 1:20 left in the third.

Warner added a five-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to close the scoring.

The El Dorado defense kept Cypress’ passing game in check, allowing Garcia to complete just eight of 24 passes for 87 yards. Garcia was forced to leave the game late in the fourth quarter with an injury.

Danny Flanagan, who caught 20 passes for 207 yards last week, was limited to three catches for 29 yards.
