Servite used an efficient second-half running attack to defeat St. John Bosco, 31-21, in an Angelus League game Friday night at St. John Bosco.
After watching St. John Bosco’s Derek Ayers rush for 115 yards--including a 73-yard scoring run--in the first half, the Friars (6-2, 1-1) produced a ground game of their own, powering for 220 yards in the second half.
Servite trailed, 14-10, at halftime but mounted a 77-yard drive--without a pass--to open the third quarter and take the lead for good. Elphamous Malbrue scored from two yards out to make it 17-14.
On the next possession, St. John Bosco quarterback Jason Hamilton made his second bad pitch of the game, and Servite recovered at the Brave 34. Six players later, Michael Lund scored from one yard out, and Servite had a 24-10 lead.
Servite’s final touchdown came on a six-yard pass from Josh Nelson to Steve Correa.
Ayers was held to 19 yards in the second half, while Lund rushed for 91 of his 118 yards after intermission.
St. John Bosco is 1-7 and 0-3.
