HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Dotson Breaks State Rushing Record

David Dotson broke the state single-season rushing record and tied another mark as Valley View High of Moreno Valley routed La Sierra, 49-14, in a Sunkist League game Friday at Moreno Valley High.

Dotson gained 215 yards in 18 carries in the first half, but only played on special teams in the second half. He broke the record of 2,713 yards, set by Santa Monica’s Glyn Milburn in 1987, on a two-yard gain on his 11th carry.

On the next play, Dotson scored on a 73-yard touchdown to tie Milburn’s record of 38 touchdowns in a season and give Valley View (8-0, 5-0) a 14-0 lead. At game’s end, Dotson had 2,827 yards.

Redondo 39, Morningside 32--John Hogrelius rushed for 159 yards and scored five touchdowns to lead the host Sea Hawks over 11th-ranked Inglewood Morningside in an Ocean League game.

Morningside closed to within two points, 26-24, on an 18-yard pass from Stais Boseman to Jesse Swayze with 31 seconds left in the third quarter, but Hogrelius scored on 19- and two-yard runs in the fourth quarter to preserve the victory for Redondo (5-3, 2-1).

La Puente Bishop Amat 28, Compton Dominguez 7--Mike Smith completed eight of 19 passes for 154 yards and two touchdowns and Scott Fields carried 19 times for 139 yards and two touchdowns to lead host Bishop Amat (8-0, 3-0) in an Angelus League game.

Walnut 14, Covina 10--Covina outgained Walnut, 280 to 170 yards, in the Valle Vista League game at Mt. San Antonio College.

However, Walnut (7-1, 3-0) scored on an 84-yard interception return by Jason Hill and 73-yard pass play from Tom Vasquez to Larry Brown, to help overcome a 10-7 third-quarter deficit.

Kennedy 37, San Fernando 10--Tailback Elijah Raphael rushed for 138 yards in 25 carries and scored three touchdowns, and Ronnie Gipson scored on a 60-yard interception return and a 55-yard pass to lead host Kennedy (7-1, 4-0) in a West Valley League game.

Montebello Cantwell-Sacred Heart 14, Salesian 13--Carlos Tejada broke up a two-point conversion pass with 1:39 left and Jimmy Cortinas recovered an onside kick to preserve the victory in a Santa Fe League game at Roosevelt High.

Fred Navarro rushed for 129 yards in 30 carries to help visiting Cantwell (3-4-1, 2-0) build a 14-0 halftime lead.

San Pedro 15, Washington 13--George Ortiz kicked a 22-yard field goal with two seconds remaining to cap a 65-yard, four-minute drive and give the visiting Pirates (5-3, 2-3) a City Southern Pacific Conference victory over fifth-ranked Washington (5-3, 2-3).

Huntington Park 25, Locke 22--Frank Rojas scored on a five-yard pass from Albert Saldan as time expired to lift visiting Huntington Park (7-0-1, 5-0-1) to an upset victory over eighth-ranked Locke (6-1, 7-2) in a City Southeastern Conference game.

Belmont 31, Hollywood 0--Running back Helmer Vallejos rushed for 176 yards in 17 carries and scored on touchdown runs of four and 12 yards to lead the Sentinels (5-3, 3-2) to a City Northern Conference victory at Hollywood (1-7, 0-5).
