Warm, Dry Winds Help Make Glendale the Nation’s Hot Spot

As wintry cold hit other parts of the country, summer staged a comeback in Los Angeles County, where the nation’s highest temperature--91 degrees in Glendale--was recorded Sunday.

In downtown Los Angeles the high was 87 degrees, said Steve Burback of WeatherData Inc., a private firm that provides weather information for The Times. The lowest temperature in the country, excluding Hawaii and Alaska, was 30 degrees below zero in Fraser, Colorado, he said.

The heat is unusual for this time of year but has not broken any records, Burback said. High temperatures are expected to remain into the middle of the week.

The unseasonably warm days, Burback said, are the result of a high-pressure zone in the Great Basin states sending bursts of a Santa Ana-type wind from the east. A similar effect caused last month’s heat wave.

Meanwhile, overnight temperatures dipped sharply from the daytime highs, with Glendale reporting a low of 49 degrees and downtown falling to 54.

“The range would not normally be that wide,” Burback said, “but it happens when you have a dry wind and lots of sunshine.”
