Tim Hardaway matched his career high by scoring 40 points for the Golden State Warriors Friday night at Philadelphia.

But Charles Barkley made sure the effort was wasted.

Barkley scored 31 points, had 15 rebounds and played good defense as the 76ers beat the Warriors, 126-116, Golden State’s first defeat of the season.

With the victory, the 76ers prevented the Warriors from winning their first four games on the road, a feat not accomplished by the team since the 1972-73 season. At 4-0, Golden State had been the last undefeated NBA team this season.

“We rebounded the ball well,” said Barkley, who made all 15 of his free throws. “They seemed to get a little complacent late in the game and started missing some shots.”

Said Armon Gilliam, who scored 28 points, on 13-of-17 shooting: “Overall we did a good job on the boards. We kept our confidence even though we were losing in the fourth quarter. We thought we could win.”

Hersey Hawkins added 27 points for the 76ers.

Chris Mullin had 17 points and Billy Owens 16 for Golden State.

Golden State held a 110-102 lead with 7:30 left, but the 76ers responded with a 12-1 surge for a 114-111 edge with 3:41 remaining.

“They got a lot of crucial rebounds,” Hardaway said. “They’re a tough team to beat and they took over in the fourth quarter.”

Chicago 108, Dallas 92--Michael Jordan scored 26 points and Scottie Pippen added 23 at Chicago as the Bulls beat the Mavericks for the seventh consecutive time.

The Bulls led, 84-65, at the start of the fourth quarter. Randy White scored eight consecutive points for the Mavericks during a 13-2 run that cut the Bulls’ lead to 86-78 midway through the quarter. But that was the closest the Mavericks got.
