Ventura 55, Compton 26--Led by running backs Tony Williams, William Mills and Danny Taylor, the Pirates broke a five-game loosing streak in a game at Larrabee Stadium.

Williams, a 5-foot-4, 208-pound sophomore from Buena High, was the Pirates’ leading rusher last season but he has seen only part-time duty this year. He made the most of his opportunities against Compton, gaining 25 yards in 11 carries and scoring five times on touchdown runs of five, one, four, 11, and one yard.

Mills, a sophomore from Cleveland, Ohio, and Ventura’s leading rusher this season, turned in his finest performance of the season, gaining 125 yards in 12 carries. He scored once a 59-yard run and caught nine passes for 72 yards.

Mills’ run in the third quarter capped a 22-point scoring binge as Ventura rallied from a 20-19 halftime deficit.

Taylor, a freshman from Ventura High added 115 yards in 11 carries. Ventura (2-6, 2-5) ground out a surprising 327 yards on the ground while amassing 515 yards in total offense.

Ventura normally builds its offense around the passing of Matt Brimigion. The sophomore quarterback completed 17 of 29 passes for 188 yards Saturday, including a three-yard touchdown pass to tight end Charles Roberson in the second quarter.

Freshman quarterback Enrique Arnero led the Compton offense, completing 10 of 31 passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns. The Tartars dropped to 0-8, 0-7.

The Ventura defense held Compton to one net yard rushing.
