WESTERN ATHLETIC ROUNDUP : BYU Wins Seventh in a Row, 56-31

Brigham Young quarterback Ty Detmer passed for 306 yards and set two more NCAA records while leading the Cougars to a 56-31 Western Athletic Conference victory over Wyoming Saturday at Provo, Utah.

The victory was BYU’s seventh in a row, improving the Cougars’ record to 7-3 overall and 6-0 in WAC.

Detmer, who completed 20 of 30 passes, eclipsed the record for number of plays participated in over three seasons (1,516), and became the first quarterback to have more than 3,000 yards total offense in three different seasons.

Detmer scored twice on two-yard runs and connected on touchdown passes plays of 15 and 23 yards to Micah Matsuzaki and Tyler Anderson.

BYU running back Jamal Willis gained 121 yards.

Ryan Yarborough caught 11 passes for 205 yards and three touchdowns for Wyoming (4-6-1, 2-5-1).

Utah 30, New Mexico 7--Utah rolled up a school-record 478 yards rushing in a WAC victory at Salt Lake City.

Keith Williams gained 191 yards and Charlie Brown rushed for 107 as Utah (6-4, 3-3) eclipsed the school record of 458 set against Texas El Paso in 1984.

Jeremy Leach of New Mexico (2-9, 1-6) passed for 34 yards in the third quarter to move into 10th place on the NCAA career passing list. Leach, a former standout at Granada Hills High, has 9,374 career yards, 25 more than another former Granada Hills star, John Elway.

Air Force 25, Army 0--Air Force (8-3) earned a probable berth in the Liberty Bowl and became the first service academy to capture the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy three consecutive years with a victory over the Cadets (3-6) at Air Force Academy, Colo.
