General Manager Jim Frey lost his struggle for control of the Chicago Cubs and was replaced by Larry Himes, former general manager of the Chicago White Sox.
Frey took over as general manager after the 1987 season, but his power eroded in a battle with former club President Don Grenesko. Frey, who has a year remaining on his contract, was demoted to senior vice president and will report to Himes.
Himes built the White Sox into a contender but was fired after the 1990 season.
