COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Golden West Stops Modesto in State Water Polo Playoffs

Carlos Uchoa scored two of his six goals in the third quarter as Golden West broke open what had been a close game, defeating Modesto, 14-7, in a first-round match in the State community college water polo tournament Friday at West Valley College in Los Gatos.

Leading, 5-4, at halftime, the Rustlers outscored Modesto, 6-1, in the third quarter.

Golden West (31-1) will face College of the Sequoias in a second-round match today. College of the Sequoias advanced with a 10-9 victory over Orange Coast in another first-round match Friday.

In nonconference men’s basketball:

Rancho Santiago 97, MiraCosta 76--Ruben Oronoz scored 24 points and made 10 of 14 shots, including four of five from three-point range, for host Rancho Santiago (1-0).

Southwestern 72, Orange Coast 64--Orange Coast (0-1) led by as many as 20 points in the first half and led, 40-24, at halftime, but Southwestern rallied and tied the score, 57-57, with about six minutes remaining in the game. Chris Cotton scored a game-high 22 points for Southwestern (1-0).

In the championship semifinals of the Barstow men’s basketball tournament:

Dixie (Utah) 85, Cypress 77 (OT)--The Chargers had a chance for a victory in regulation, but Bill Banks and David Boyle each missed shots in the final seven seconds, and Dixie center Walter Outlaw took control in overtime, scoring seven of his team’s 14 points.

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Golden West 90, Bakersfield 58--Guard Erika Miller hit 10 of 16 shots for 23 points for the two-time state champion Rustlers.

Cypress 65, Pierce 60--The Chargers, 2-53 over the past two seasons, began the season with a victory, overcoming a 39-18 halftime deficit at Cypress.

In Orange Empire Conference women’s volleyball:

Golden West 3, Riverside 0--The Rustlers (20-0, 10-0) assured themselves of at least a tie for the conference title with their 64th consecutive conference victory as Heather Flaherty and Tracy Schriber each had 14 kills and Brenda Irby added 13.
