Chaminade High’s Ted Corcoran was standing amid a group of pen-toting reporters Friday night, doing his best to act as if nothing major had taken place, when the roof caved in on his humility act.

“This guy, this guy,” Chaminade Coach Rich Lawson said. “What else can he do?”

Corcoran rolled his eyes.

“Get outta here,” Corcoran shot back with a grin.

Too late. Cover blown. Corcoran played one of the best all-around games in school history to lead the Eagles to a 35-8 Mission League victory over Bishop Montgomery, clinching a Southern Section Division III playoff berth for Chaminade (8-2, 4-2 in league play).

“I guess I had luck with me tonight,” Corcoran said with a shrug.

Uh-huh. Wink, wink.

This is a night in your life, Ted Corcoran: One touchdown reception as a tight end, one sack and an interception as a linebacker, field goals of 38, 49 and 50 yards as the kicker, and on his lone carry as a fullback, he gained two yards for a first down to keep a drive alive.

“It was a good team effort tonight,” he said.

Chaminade led, 32-0, in the fourth quarter, yet this game was over by halftime for practical purposes. The first half was all Chaminade. The Eagles not only battered Bishop Montgomery (6-4, 3-3) defensively, but they had the lion’s share of good fortune.

On Chaminade’s second possession, the Eagles drove to the Bishop Montgomery 16, where the drive stalled. Corcoran kicked a 33-yard field goal, then was knocked on his wallet by a defender. Chaminade elected to take the points off the board, taking a first down at the eight-yard line.

Three plays later, Justin Giovannettone (114 yards in 19 carries) scored on a six-yard pitch around right end for a 7-0 lead.

Chaminade’s second touchdown also had the blessings of Lady Luck. The Eagles drove to the Bishop Montgomery four, where on third down, Hall hit Corcoran with a swing pass. Corcoran was drilled at the one and fumbled the ball, which bounded into the end zone and was recovered by teammate Mike Sweeney for a 14-0 lead with 9 minutes 56 seconds left in the half. Chaminade held Bishop Montgomery to 17 yards and two first downs in the half.
