COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Cal Lutheran’s Norine Runs to Regional Title

Cal Lutheran’s Jonz Norine won the men’s title and Occidental’s Becky Kopchik won the women’s race Saturday in an NCAA Division III cross-country regional at Rancho Santa Fe Polo Club in San Diego.

Norine clocked 25 minutes 12 seconds over the eight-kilometer (4.97 miles) course to beat runner-up Jose Garcia by 18 seconds. But with his second-place finish, Garcia carried Occidental to the men’s team title with 34 points.

In the women’s race, Kopchik ran 18:29 over a five-kilometer course and teammate Arcelia Gomez (19:05) was third to lead the Tigers to a third-place total of 52 points, nine points behind UC San Diego’s winning total of 43. Pomona-Pitzer was second with 47.

The Occidental men’s team, along with Norine, Kopchik, Gomez and CLU’s Marissa van der Valk, advanced to the Division III championships Saturday in Newport News, Va.

In another meet:

NCAA Region 8 championships--Cal State Northridge’s Sasha Vujic (32:19) finished 50th in the men’s 10,000-meter race at Woodward Park in Fresno.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Valley 65, Citrus 61--Forward Randy Brown scored 25 points, had 14 rebounds and made five steals to lead Valley (1-1) in the consolation round of the Mt. San Antonio tournament.

Oxnard 60, Porterville 46--Guard Shawn Talley and forward Tony Ziuraitis helped host Oxnard jump to a 33-13 halftime lead in a nonconference game. Talley and Ziuraitis each scored 12 points.

Canyons 87, Rancho Santiago 76--Marquis Wilborn had 18 points and nine rebounds and Reggie Bell had 17 points to lead host Canyons (2-0). The Cougars overcame a five-point halftime deficit in the nonconference game.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Harbor 86, Moorpark 47--Kim Young scored a game-high 29 points and Bridgette Williams scored 23 to lead host Harbor (2-0) in a nonconference game. Moorpark is 0-1.
