UCSD Wins Regional Tournament

UC San Diego’s women’s volleyball team won the Division III Volleyball Northeast Regionals with a three-game victory over SUNY Stony Brook Saturday at the Rochester Institute of Technology.

Vikki Van Duyne (16 kills, three aces) and Liz Vesanovic (15 kills) led the Tritons to the 15-10, 15-2, 15-9 victory. UCSD improved to 25-5. SUNY Stony Brook fell to 35-7.

Pepperdine handed the University of San Diego a 15-6, 15-12, 15-10 West Coast Conference defeat at USD (17-13, 7-7). Jennifer Lofftus and Nikki Wallace, who combined for 19 kills, were the Toreras’ top attackers. Pepperdine is 22-5, 14-0.

CROSS COUNTRY

UCSD missed sweeping the men’s and women’s Division III Regionals titles at Rancho Santa Fe. The women edged Pomona Pitzer 43-47 while the men fell short by 22 points to Occidental. The Tritons were bolstered by the efforts of Viviana Reza, Erin Adams and Karen Hinkle, who finished fourth, fifth and sixth. Samuel Gwynn, with a seventh, was UCSD’s top male finisher.

The Point Loma Nazarene women’s team had its best team finish in school history at the NAIA national championships in Kenosha, Wis., where the Crusaders took 10th. Vanessa Couch ran an All-American qualifying time of 18:31 over 3.1 miles, good for 13th place. The Crusader men didn’t measure up to their No. 7 ranking, finishing 13th.
