OUTLOOK
No doubt about it. Not only is Rancho Alamitos the class of the league again this year, but the Vaqueros rate among the best teams in the county. Becker returns the nucleus of a 1990-91 group that lost only one game all season, 74-72, to Playa del Rey St. Bernard in the Southern Section Division III-A championship game. With Stecker and James, the Vaqueros have an excellent offensive tandem. Stecker, an All-County selection last year, averaged 13 points and 11 rebounds; James averaged 12.5 points and 6.1 assists from her point guard position. But it’s the team’s pressure defense that creates havoc with the opposition. “Our defensive intensity is our biggest strength,” said Becker, who plans to continue using a five-man motion offense in which any player can have the ball--and shoot it--at any given time. And as if Rancho Alamitos already wasn’t a force, this is the tallest Vaquero team in the past three seasons, with six players who are 5 feet 8 or taller.
