OUTLOOK

Even with two talented players such as Surface and Asari, both all-league selections who averaged 15 points last season, Yamaguchi faces a tough challenge. “I don’t have any girl who wants to play 100%,” said Yamaguchi, who begins her third year as coach of the Mariners. “You look at a team like Rancho (Alamitos), they’re all basketball. That’s not their (players’) top priority here.” Which is frustrating for Yamaguchi, who asserts that the players have “lots of natural talent” although they are not fundamentally sound. Yamaguchi also points to a lack of participation in the basketball program by girls at Pacifica as a drawback. “The last two seasons, I’ve only had enough players to make a varsity and a JV team,” she said. Still, Yamaguchi somehow feels the Mariners, if motivated enough, can contend for the league title and lists beating defending champion Rancho Alamitos, one of the county’s top teams, among her goals this year. She predicts a second-place finish. And why not? It doesn’t cost anything to dream. Realistically, however, Pacifica will have difficulty staying on the court with the Vaqueros even in its most inspired moments.
