OUTLOOK

Shanahan, who last coached high school basketball 10 years ago in Goffstown, N.H., got the itch to do it again after the Los Amigos position opened at the end of last season. What he finds in his new venture is a young team that lost its two best players the past three seasons--center Carrie Elsaesser and guard May Li--to graduation. Elsaesser, a 6-foot-3 center, averaged 17.3 rebounds and 12.4 points. Li led the Lobos in scoring with 376 points and assists with 159 (almost seven per game). So Shanahan will have to implement a more balanced attack rather than relying on those two. “We don’t have a dominant player, so we are going to have to spread the scoring load around,” Shanahan said. The coach said the Lobos will use a fast-break offense and will go with a man-to-man defense, at least at the start of the season. “Since we have so many small girls, they are pretty quick,” Shanahan said. “We have to capitalize on that.” Los Amigos finished 1990-91 with five consecutive league victories to move into the Southern Section playoffs, where the Lobos lost to Newport Harbor, 69-43, in the Division III-AA qualifying round.
