SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA REGIONAL VOLLEYBALL PLAYOFFS : Top-Seeded Laguna Beach to Play Bakersfield Tuesday
The Laguna Beach girls’ volleyball team, fresh off winning the Southern Section 5-A championship Saturday night, is the top-seeded team in the Southern California Regional Division I playoffs, which begin Tuesday night at various sites.
The Artists (22-2) will play host to unseeded Bakersfield High (13-4) in a first-round match. First-round matches in all five regional divisions are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Regional finals are scheduled for Dec. 3, with the winners advancing to the State finals against the winners in the Northern California Regionals Dec. 7 at Cal State Fullerton.
El Toro (18-4), which was swept by Laguna Beach in the 5-A finals, is unseeded and will play at third-seeded Poway (16-2) in a first-round match.
Although La Habra is the two-time defending State Division II champion, the Highlanders were seeded second in Division II behind Bakersfield North (22-2). La Habra (21-2) will play host to unseeded Bakersfield Highland (20-4). Unseeded Sunny Hills (16-3) will play at third-seeded Encinitas Torrey Pines (20-4).
La Habra, led by middle blocker Zrinka Kristich’s 39 kills, edged El Modena in five games Saturday to win their third consecutive Division 3-A title.
El Modena (20-2) is seeded third in Division III and will play host to unseeded La Jolla (27-5). The regional and state playoffs have expanded from three to five divisions this year, and El Modena was given the option of playing in either Division II or III.
In Division IV, unseeded Whittier Christian (16-3) will play at fourth-seeded San Diego Clairemont (12-7).
In Division V, unseeded St. Margaret’s (17-2) will play at fourth-seeded El Cajon Christian (23-5), and unseeded Capistrano Valley Christian (16-2) will play at second-seeded Reedley Immanuel (21-3).
