A new coach is trying to work with a young and inexperienced team lacking a floor leader. Heather Brannan, the Aztecs’ All-County selection and unofficial county scoring champion at 27.8 points per game last year, is now playing at Orange Coast College. It makes for an interesting scenario at La Quinta. Dolensky, a former basketball standout at Bolsa Grande High and the University of New Mexico, is now a mathematics teacher at La Quinta and taking over a team that won the league title in the 1989-90 season, but that fell to the bottom half of the league standings last year. He coached the boys’ freshman and sophomore teams and was a varsity assistant at Cibola High in Albuquerque, N.M., the past few years, but this is his first year coaching girls. He already sees a lot of work ahead. “We have five players coming back who, even though they are returners, don’t have much experience,” said Dolensky, who wants to instill an aggressive style of play. “We’re going to try to push the ball down and see what happens,” he said. “If we can get a quick bucket, fine. If not, we’ll set it up.” He added that he has been impressed with the positive attitude and hard work of his players so far. “They are having to learn a new system, but they are doing OK,” he said.
