The 1991 Hall of Fame Bowl, San Diego’s one-time annual community college football bowl game, has been canceled, Southwestern College President Joseph Conte announced Tuesday.

The bowl, which was to match the winner of the Southern Division of the Mission Conference with an at-large team, was to have been played Dec. 7 at Southwestern’s Devore Stadium.

Palomar College, the winner of the Southern Division, announced Sunday that it would play instead in the Dec. 7 Elks Bowl at Merced College against Chabot College of Hayward. Chabot is ranked No. 1 in California, Palomar No. 2.

The Chargers acquired cornerback Tony Blaylock on waivers from the Cleveland Browns. Blaylock, a fourth-round draft pick by the Browns in 1988, played in five games this season before being placed on injured reserve Nov. 13 with a rotator cuff injury.

To make room on the roster, the Chargers are expected to place a player on injured reserve today.

The Padres will retain Las Vegas Stars Manager Jim Riggleman and his entire staff for the 1992 season, according to Ed Lynch, director of minor leagues for the Padres.

It will be Riggleman’s second year in a Stars uniform. Jon Matlock will return as the pitching coach, Tony Torchia the hitting instructor and Larry Duensing the trainer.

The records for points (38) and field goals (17) had been set in 1974 by Judy Malone, who is now UCSD’s coach.
