OUTLOOK

The Royals lost three key players from last season’s 13-8 team that finished second in league with the graduations of Diane Wiskus, Wendy Herb and first-team all-league Laura Morris. Rosary does return leading scorer and all-league forward Carolyn Chey (11.8-point average) and Kay, a starting guard. Seniors Crosser and Van Lleuwen and sophomores Richardson and Schiavone also logged valuable playing time. Co-coaches Powers and Wise are concerned that lack of height will lead to too many one-shot possessions. The Royals will try to compensate by screening out on the backboards and utilizing team speed with a fast-break offense and full-court pressure defense. Crosser and Benard are both 5-11 and should shore up the rebounding. Benard is coming off the volleyball team and has good athletic ability, while the Chey sisters are still involved with the Southern Section finalist tennis team. Rosary will shoot for third place in a well-balanced field that includes Mater Dei, Bishop Amat and much-improved Santa Margarita. This will be Rosary’s final season in the Angelus League. Next year, the Royals move to the Sunset League.
