Cal State Dominguez Hills was out of its class Tuesday night against Pepperdine.

But the Waves didn’t exactly look like world-beaters while defeating the Toros, 83-54, before 1,521 at Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu.

Pepperdine, which won its seventh consecutive home game dating to last season, improved to 2-0. Dominguez dropped to 1-2.

There was little doubt from the outset that the Waves would win. But it was not a sharp outing for Pepperdine, which committed several turnovers, made only 21 of 32 (68%) free throws and looked sluggish in trying to run its offense.

Pepperdine, which led at halftime, 33-18, made 28 of 47 shots from the field (60%). And the Waves held Dominguez, a Division II team, to 35% shooting (19 for 55).

Pepperdine outrebounded the Toros, 39-28.

“We were making a lot of bad decisions,” Pepperdine Coach Tom Asbury said, “but that will all come around. We were playing a lot of guys tonight--that’s one reason why.”

Doug Christie scored 17 points to lead the Waves. Segaro Bozart led the Toros with 10 points.
