OUTLOOK

Although El Modena has only four returning players from the ’91 Century League championship team, the Vanguards are still among the favorites to win the title this season. However, Cahill won’t have his full squad intact until the volleyball team finishes its season. Four of Cahill’s projected starters play for the girls’ volleyball team and won’t practice with the basketball team until next week. And when those players arrive, they will be tested immediately. During the first two weeks of December, El Modena plays Cypress, Esperanza, and could also meet Brea-Olinda in the second round of the Brea-Olinda tournament. “We should be able to adjust because the volleyball players have all been in the basketball system before,” Cahill said. “We’re just gearing everything toward league play.” Among the four starters who play volleyball is Benitez, a first-team all-league selection who averaged nine points and nine rebounds per game last season. El Modena’s front line features Benitez, Farina, and Shine. All three are 5 feet 10 or taller. Shine averaged 20 points per game for the junior varsity before moving up to the varsity for the final nine league games. Watts also joins the team from the JV squad.
