All-league guard Aliff (14.0-point per game average) leads a strong returning contingent from last season’s team that finished 20-5. Works, Castro and Endow also started, giving Cazett, the first-year coach, an experienced core to build around. He expects to have a good shooting team especially if Aliff, one of the league’s top point guards, picks up where she left off. Savanna plans to go more to a low post offense if Works, a 6-footer, continues to improve. Cazett figures a strong inside game will give Aliff more open shots from the perimeter. Rebounding should be stronger but is still questionable because there isn’t that much height aside from Works. Much of Savanna’s hope is contingent on playing tougher man-to-man defense, according to Cazett. The Rebels never played man-to-man last season, so Cazett has spent much of the preseason practice sessions teaching the new defensive schemes. If Savanna can absorb the new offensive and defensive philosophies, it will again be a factor in the Orange League’s race for second place.
