Man, 18, Found Dead After Apartment Fire

Los Angeles Fire Department investigators Sunday were trying to determine the cause of a blaze that killed one person and caused about $100,000 in damage to a North Hollywood apartment complex.

The fire broke out about 6:15 a.m. in an upstairs apartment at 6633 Vineland Ave., engulfing one unit and causing smoke damage to another, spokesman Michael Little said. Firefighters extinguished the flames in about 30 minutes, but later discovered the body of Paul Murphy, 18, of Arleta inside the gutted unit.

Three other people--including two children--escaped from the apartment unharmed. The children later complained of minor smoke inhalation, Little said. Another resident of the apartment complex cut his hand when he broke the glass on the fire extinguisher, according to Little.
