PREP SOCCER ROUNDUP : Top-Ranked Santa Ana Edges Santa Margarita

Hugo Ramirez dribbled past two defenders and scored from about six yards to give Santa Ana a 1-0 victory over host Santa Margarita in a nonleague boys’ soccer match Monday.

Santa Ana, the defending champion of the Southern Section 4-A Division, starts the season as the top-ranked team in the Orange County Coaches’ Poll.

Santa Margarita soccer--A story Tuesday incorrectly described the method by which Santa Margarita won the Angelus League boys’ soccer title last season. Santa Margarita won the championship outright.

Santa Margarita, ranked seventh in the same poll, is the defending Angelus League champion. The Eagles were awarded the title when Mater Dei had to forfeit its victories because of the use of an ineligible player.

In other nonleague boys’ soccer:

Kennedy 2, Brea-Olinda 1--Kennedy won the Manny Toledo Green/Gold Cup with the victory at home.

Estancia 2, Newport Harbor 0--Kevin Westmont scored the final goal of the match on a rebound off the goal post. Chad Weaver had attempted a shot but the ball hit the post. Weaver scored the first goal on a corner kick.

Magnolia 2, Rancho Alamitos 0--Sweeper John Sharp scored on a 40-yard shot for Magnolia’s first goal. Douglas Alvarado scored the second on a direct kick just outside the penalty box. Rancho Alamitos is 0-1.

Villa Park 3, San Clemente 0--David Szekeres scored three goals, two in the second half, for host Villa Park (1-0).

Trabuco Hills 1, Katella 0--Jeff Martino scored the match’s only goal on a penalty kick in the first half for Trabuco Hills. Katella (0-1) had two shots on goal.

Laguna Hills 2, Woodbridge 9--Giuseppe Lombardo and Julio Montes had goals for the Hawks (1-0) at Laguna Hills.
