The Tillers, ranked third in the state Division II in the preseason by Cal-Hi Sports, haven’t lost a league game since 1989, and because of the return of two of the league’s premier players, they are favored to win the title for the fourth consecutive season. Garner, the league MVP and Southern Section first-team All-Division II selection who averaged 20 points and 11 rebounds, and Needham, a first-team all-league selection who averaged 19 points and 11 rebounds, give Tustin considerable strength inside. Salapski, a second-team all-league selection who averaged five points and six rebounds, gives the team even more. But the Tillers are untested at guard because of the graduation of three-time all-league player Wanda Sequeira, who now plays for San Francisco. Two sophomores, a junior and a freshman will compete for playing time at guard. Falk gives the edge to Bray, who played for the varsity last season, and Kirkwood, who played for the junior varsity, because of experience. If all else fails, Needham might play point guard, which would present some matchup problems for opponents. “Last year’s team was the best team in school history, and this year’s team has the potential to be better if the guards come around,” Falk said.
