Santa Monica Football Team Plays in Bowl Game Saturday

The Santa Monica College football team, which won its first conference championship in 11 seasons, will play host to San Bernardino Valley College in the K-Swiss Western State I Bowl at 7 p.m. Saturday at Corsair Field.

The Corsairs (7-3), winners of the Western State Conference Southern Division title, is 3-4 in bowl games. In its last postseason game, Santa Monica defeated Fullerton, 14-7, in the 1980 Avocado Bowl.

Quarterback Dion Bergeron set a school record by completing 66.4% of his passes. He has passed for 1,456 yards and 11 touchdowns. The Corsairs’ top receivers are Isaac Bruce, Greg Hooks and Jason Lucky.

Santa Monica’s top rusher is Tim Holliday, who has 635 yards and 10 touchdowns in 101 carries.

The Corsair defense is led by end Kareeb Harbin, linebacker Darren Johnson and back Derrick Stewart, who had a team-high five interceptions.

San Bernardino (8-2), champion of the Foothill Conference, depends heavily on the passing of quarterback Richard Robles, the conference’s offensive player of the year. Robles has passed for 2,283 yards and 23 touchdowns. The receiving corps includes Tony Wright, Obie Cooper and Johnny Thomas.

Running back Ladale Jackson has averaged 6.2 yards a carry and is also a good receiver.
