Lions Try Their Luck at Gersten

Off to its best start in four seasons, the Loyola Marymount women’s basketball team will play host to Southern Utah in a nonconference game at 5:20 p.m. Saturday at Gersten Pavilion.

It will be the home opener for the Lions (3-1). Southern Utah is 0-2.

Loyola finished second in the Michigan State Holiday Classic at East Lansing last week. The Lions lost to Michigan State, 82-51, after defeating Western Michigan, 63-56, in the tournament opener.

Senior forward Joelle Longobardi, who averages 17.5 points, has scored in double figures in all of Loyola’s games. Freshman forward Tanya White is averaging nine points and a team-leading 8.5 rebounds.

Senior guard Jamie Jesko, who was selected to the all-tournament team at East Lansing, is averaging 12.8 points and 6.8 rebounds.

The Lions will conclude their home stand with a game against NCAA Division II power Cal Poly Pomona on Dec. 13.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills men’s basketball team will play nonconference games in Colorado tonight and Saturday.

The Toros (2-2) will play Northern Colorado at 7:30 tonight and the University of Denver at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Dominguez Hills defeated Point Loma Nazarene, 77-56, on Tuesday in San Diego. The Toros were led by freshman guard Chris Thompson, who scored 17 points.

Thompson was the fourth different Dominguez Hills player to take high-scoring honors in a game.

Sophomore guard Rick Robinson, a transfer from El Camino College, leads Dominguez Hills in scoring with an 11-point average. Forward Michael Moore, a 6-7 senior, and Thompson are next at 10.3 points. Moore is also the team’s top rebounder with a 4.8 average.

Dominguez Hills will play host to North Central Illinois in a nonconference game at 8:05 p.m. Thursday.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s basketball team will try to end a four-game losing streak when it plays host to Cal State Hayward at 7:30 tonight.

The Toros (1-4) lost to National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics District III power Christ College Irvine, 67-59, in a road game on Wednesday.

Dominguez Hills played the game without leading scorer and rebounder Cheri Bullet, who has an ankle sprain. The senior forward is expected to return for the Hayward game.

Bullet is averaging 14.8 points and 10.3 rebounds. Junior forward Erika Manning, a transfer from Orange Coast College, is averaging 8.8 points and 5.4 rebounds. Center Dionne Vanlandingham is averaging 7.8 points and five rebounds.

Hayward is 0-3. The Toros defeated the Pioneers, 51-47, last season.

Dominguez Hills continues its home stand when it plays Biola at 5:45 p.m. Thursday.

Former North Torrance High standout Lenee Hill, a middle hitter for Azusa Pacific, has been named the 1991 National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics women’s volleyball player of the year by the American Volleyball Coaches Assn.

Hill, a 5-10 senior, was earlier selected as the NAIA District III player of the year. A resident of Redondo Beach, Hill led Azusa Pacific (30-7) to the district title and a berth in the NAIA national tournament.

She averaged 4.7 kills, 3.4 digs and 2.0 blocks per game.

Mail-in registration is under way for the Redondo Beach Sunset Youth Baseball & Softball League’s 1992 season for youths ages 5 to 14.

The cost is $55 for baseball and softball leagues and $40 for Tee Ball.

The season starts in March. League officials are also searching for coaches and managers.

The Bishop Montgomery High baseball team will sponsor a Christmas tree sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the school.

Proceeds will go toward the school’s new baseball facility, which is under construction.
