The Cubs are young, which was also the case last season. The difference is, Thomason thinks there is more talent to offset the inexperience. “Sometimes you’re young and talented, but that wasn’t the case last year,” he said. “This year, I do think we have some ability.” The best of the bunch is Bailey, who had a sensational freshman season. He averaged 23 points and was named first team all-league. Bailey has grown nearly two inches and bulked up a little this season. “He’s one of those guys who is so good so early that you just hope he keeps working hard,” Thomason said. “People marvel at his athletic talent, but there are a few things he could do better, like defense or his shooting range. He does have great ability.” And a better supporting cast this season. Adams and Kaufman should take some of the scoring burden off Bailey. “He felt he had to do a lot of things himself last year,” Thomason said. “I think he knows that now he can create something, dish off and someone will be able to finish it off.” But even with the better cast, don’t look for the Cubs to be much of a factor this season. “If we can flip our record around, go 15-10, I’ll be pretty happy,” Thomason said. “Then I think we’ll be very good the next two years.”
