Toreros’ Axsater Wins Title

Fredrik Axsater, a USD sophomore from Sweden, defeated teammate Ignacio Martinez, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 to win Saturday’s singles championship in the San Diego All-College tournament.

The doubles final was an all-San Diego State affair. Jeff Belloli and Chris Numbers won the championship with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Joe McDonough and Kerry Safdie.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

PLNC overwhelmed hapless Whittier in an 88-64 nonconference victory at home. Mark Bulgin contributed 19 points and was five for seven behind the three-point arc.

Frank Dews had 11 rebounds and 14 points for the Crusaders (3-4), who held a 45-21 halftime lead. Whittier dropped to 0-6.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Lisa Beaver scored 18 points and pulled down 10 rebounds and teammate Erika Scholl added 10 points to lead UCSD (4-1) to an 81-36 victory over UC Santa Cruz (0-6).

Point Loma Nazarene won its second game in a row, a 106-46 drubbing of Cal Lutheran in a nonconference game at PLNC. Carrie Carambas was everywhere for the Crusaders (5-3). She had 12 points, nine steals and 11 assists. Six PLNC players scored in double figures and for the second consecutive night, everyone scored. Cal Lutheran dropped to 0-4.

GOLF

Kevin Riley of San Diego and Tom McGinnis of Encinitas emerged from a field of 86 hopefuls and qualified for February’s Buick Open. During the qualifying tournament, Riley shot a four-under-par 68 at the 6,592-yard Torrey Pines North course and McGinnis a 71.

BOWLING

Jess Stayrook of San Diego teamed with Aleta Sill to a 16-game record of 14-2 and a pinfall of 7,731 for the second-round lead of the $200,000 Cambridge Mixed Doubles tournament at Reno.

INDOOR SOCCER

Former Socker Rod Castro scored two goals and had an assist as the Baltimore Blast beat the Dallas Sidekicks, 6-2, in the Major Soccer League.

Castro put the Blast ahead to stay with two goals that built Baltimore’s advantage to 3-1. Dallas closed to 3-2 before Baltimore pulled away.

Billy Ronson added two goals for Baltimore.

Beto and David Doyle scored Dallas’ goals. Tatu was held without a goal or assist for the first time of the season.
