What do you call a team with no seniors and only two returning starters? Some coaches might refer to it as a hardship. But Jenkins assumes a more benevolent posture. “It’s a project,” said Jenkins, in his second season with Capistrano Valley Christian. “We are trying to build this program so that when these guys are juniors and seniors, it’ll be good years for us.” In the meantime, Jenkins will have to make do with a young squad and without the services of Nathan Owens (20 points and 8.5 rebounds per game), who graduated. “He carried most of the load. Period,” Jenkins said. “This year we’re looking for more balance. We are looking for everyone to contribute. It’ll definitely be a team concept.” The Eagles have some size up front with Carlsen (6 rebounds per game last season) and newcomer Underwood. On defense, the coach expects to show different looks to “stop the most positive aspects of the other team’s offense.” Jenkins, however, is weary of his Olympic League competition. “I’m not very optimistic,” he said. The Eagles finished last in the league last season but won a first-round game in the Southern Section Division V-AA playoffs before losing to Van Nuys Montclair Prep, 91-55.
