Virginia won the NCAA men’s soccer championship Sunday, beating Santa Clara on penalty kicks, 3-1, after a scoreless tie through 60 minutes of overtime.

Goalie Tom Henske saved two penalty kicks and a third caromed off the crossbar. Henske replaced Jeff Causey in the 149th minute because Virginia Coach Bruce Arena wanted a fresh goalkeeper for the penalty kicks.

It was the first outright NCAA soccer title for the Cavaliers (19-1-2). Santa Clara (20-1-2) and Virginia shared the title in 1989 when there were no penalty kicks in the final.
