OUTLOOK

Gone from the Argonaut team that took third place in league last season are its two leading players, forward Mark Perry (24.9 points and 9.6 rebounds per game), who is now playing at Fullerton College, and guard Joe Aguirre, who led the county in assists with 229. So Van Cleave needs someone to pick up the slack. He believes Archer is the guy. “Cornel will take care of the scoring that used to be done by Perry and Aguirre,” Van Cleave said. Archer averaged eight points last year but missed several games for disciplinary reasons. He’s the only returning starter on a squad loaded with players up from the junior varsity and sophomore teams. Key among them are Green, Nguyen and Chavez, a sophomore Van Cleave is very high on. “We are very young,” Van Cleave said, “but we’ve got really good speed and we can defend and shoot the ball. But it’s going to be tough on the boards.” The Argonauts don’t have a player taller than 6 feet 3 (center Jim Palmer), so Van Cleave plans to run a double low-post offense with Archer and Green. He also figures the team will have to play solid defense to remain competitive. “We have to press if we want to stay in the game,” Van Cleave said.
