Laguna Hills was hit hard by graduation, losing four starters, including leading scorers Paul La Mott (24.6 point average) and Brian Matsen (19.9). “We probably lost as many points, rebounds and assists to graduation as any team in the county,” Brown said. Colton, a two-year starter, is the only varsity returner with any significant playing time. He averaged eight points last season and was an effective passer as a forward, but needs to adjust to a new role as a scorer this season. “He needs to continue to work on being more aggressive,” Brown said. Cook, a varsity reserve last season, has been playing well at guard so far, Brown said. And Brooks, who was promoted from the junior varsity, has played well in the post. The Hawks are off to a good start, going 2-1 in the Garden Grove tournament, and Brown sees some promise. “We have good overall height and we play together very well,” he said. “But we lack experience and quickness and overall ballhandling.” If some of the players develop quickly, particularly sophomores Brooks and Mansouri, the Hawks might contend for third or fourth place. “Trabuco Hills has a lot of guys back and Estancia will be up there,” Brown said.
