HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Oak Park Ends Losing Streak

Oak Park High snapped a 27-game losing streak that dated to the 1989-90 season by holding on to defeat Village Christian, 53-50, Friday night in a nonleague basketball game at Village Christian.

Oak Park blew a 10-point lead in the final quarter, but rallied on the strength of two layups by David Shaw and a three-point basket by Eric Pryor.

Pryor led all scorers with 18 points and Shaw added 15.

Village Christian trailed, 43-33, entering the fourth quarter but took a brief lead behind the scoring of Tarik Blair and David Fennell. Blair led the Crusaders with 17 points and Fennell contributed 16.

In other boys’ basketball games:

Banning 49, Chatsworth 47--Point guard Benny Tillman scored all 11 of Banning’s points in the final period, including the game-winning basket with two seconds to play, as the Pilots edged Chatsworth (4-2) in a championship semifinal in the L.A. Invitational tournament.

Brady Mertes led the Chancellors with 17 points and 14 rebounds and Kewn Manor added 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Canyon 54, El Toro 53 (OT)--Guard Tom Estrada sank a free throw with one minute to play in overtime as the Cowboys (3-3) rallied from a 12-point deficit to post a consolation-round victory at the El Dorado tournament.

Forward Joe Ferguson, a 6-foot-4 senior, scored 17 of his game-high 29 points and had 12 of his 14 rebounds in the second half as Canyon rallied from a 37-25 deficit. Forward Brent Stout added 11 points for Canyon.

Santa Clara 84, Bishop Diego 47--Isaiah Mustafa scored 16 points and 10 other Santa Clara players scored at least three points in a nonleague game.

Stevie Amar totaled 11 points and Pat Lampson and Art Barron each added 10 for Santa Clara (4-2).

Kennedy 87, Hamilton 74--Kennedy held a precarious one-point lead after the first quarter but pulled away and beat Hamilton in a nonleague game at Kennedy. Joe Wyatt scored 31 points for the Golden Cougars and Vidale Little added 14.

Santa Paula 46, L.A. Baptist 35--Trailing, 22-21, at halftime, Santa Paula held the Knights to just 13 second-half points in a semifinal of the Fillmore tournament. Joey Ramirez scored 19 points to lead the Cardinals (4-1), who will face Nordhoff tonight for the championship.

Nordhoff 56, Carpinteria 53--Forward Tim Sebek scored 20 points and had 13 rebounds as the Rangers (3-3) advanced to the championship game of the Fillmore tournament. Nacho Vega added 15 points for Nordhoff.

Hoover 78, Burbank 76--Chad Reese scored 30 points and Dave Ulloa made six of eight three-point shots and scored 26 points to lead Hoover to a nonleague victory at Burbank. Ulloa also had 11 assists and Gabe Alvarado added 17 points and 11 rebounds for Hoover (3-2).

Henri Mamgandi had 19 points and Kendricks Lewis added 16 for Burbank (2-3).

Wilson 75, Granada Hills 63--Senior center Shelton Simmons scored 20 points and had 14 rebounds for Granada Hills.

Paraclete 71, Bethel Christian 43--Sean O’Gara and Jason Curtis each scored 17 points and Tony Papa added 16 as the Spirits (3-4) won in a championship semifinal game in the Boron tournament.

Highland 68, Antelope Valley Christian 33--Brian Buleson scored a game-high 19 points in the Bulldogs’ nonleague victory.

Yuma (Ariz.) 74, Providence 66--Barry Dabbaghian had 24 points and 10 rebounds for Providence (2-3) in the consolation semifinals of the Parker (Ariz.) tournament.

St. Genevieve 70, Rolling Hills Prep 33--Ryan McGinnis scored 14 points to lead the Valiants (1-2) in a nonleague game.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Chaminade 58, Jasper 44--Three Eagles scored in double figures in Chaminade’s pool-play victory in the Jasper tournament in Alberta, Canada.

Katy Bloodgood scored 15 points, Georgia Roy added 12 points and 14 rebounds, and Becky Flora had 11 for Chaminade (8-1).

Bell-Jeff 78, Bishop Diego 12--Jany Despotov scored 18 points and had 15 rebounds and Lori Leon added 16 points and 12 rebounds as the Guards (4-1) rolled in a consolation semifinal game of the Cabrillo tournament.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Chatsworth 1, Kennedy 1--Hernan Garcia scored the tying goal for Chatsworth (3-1-2, 2-1-2) in the waning moments of a Northwest Valley Conference match at Chatsworth.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Crescenta Valley 4, San Marino 1--Suzanne Vishanoff scored two goals and Lynette Micheli added a goal and an assist to lead host Crescenta Valley (5-0) to a nonleague win. Cara Campbell scored the other Crescenta Valley goal from beyond midfield.

Calabasas 2, St. Bonaventure 0--Kristi Thompsen and Angie Moreno each scored to lift host Calabasas a nonleague match.
