Jacot, Amundson Run Amok in SCC Victory : Division X: Running backs combine for 280 yards, four touchdowns as Flames beat Calvary Chapel, 34-14.

There was nothing fancy about the game plan.

Simply have your running backs run through the middle, around the outside and just about anywhere else they want to go, get your defense to pound the opposition into submission, and you have a fair chance of winning a football game.

That’s what Southern California Christian did Friday night in front of 2,000 at Santa Ana Stadium to win the Southern Section Division X championship with a 34-14 victory over Calvary Chapel.

The Flames (12-2) got another stellar performance from junior tailback Mike Jacot, who scored three touchdowns and rushed for 136 yards in 10 carries, and fullback Dennis Amundson, who ran for a game-high 144 yards in 21 carries and scored a touchdown.

The three touchdowns gave Jacot an Orange County single-season record of 37 rushing, breaking the mark set by Ron Papazian of Whittier Christian in 1989. Jacot also finished the season with 2,037 yards rushing.

Southern California Christian avenged a 19-14 loss to Calvary Chapel in the Arrowhead League championship game in November.

In that game, the Flames lost Amundson at the half because of a bruised diaphragm, and Calvary Chapel keyed on Jacot and limited the tailback to only 53 yards rushing. This time, Jacot went out early in the second quarter with a shoulder injury and sat out the remainder of the half.

Those were anxious moments for Southern California Christian Coach Bert Esposito and the Flames, but Jacot returned in the third quarter.

“I told him we needed him more on defense than offense,” Esposito said. “We iced the shoulder (at halftime), and he was ready to go. We also had Dennis the whole game, that was a big difference.”

If the Flame offense was in high gear with Amundson and Jacot, who also plays strong safety, it was their defense that broke Calvary Chapel.

The Eagles (11-2) couldn’t get their passing game going against the pressuring Southern California Christian defense. Quarterback Jason Sharkey completed only one of two passes for 11 yards in the first half as the Flames limited Calvary Chapel to 13 plays and 74 total yards in the first two quarters.

In their earlier meeting, Sharkey passed for 206 yards, including 149 in the first half.

“Basically, we just put a lot of pressure on them,” Esposito said. “We played tighter on their receivers and we stayed with a zone defense most of the time.”

Southern California Christian jumped to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on touchdown runs of 21 and 11 yards by Jacot. The Flames increased the lead to 20-0 on a 20-yard pass from quarterback Nathan Lambie to wide receiver Scott Williams with 9:11 remaining in the half.

The Eagles got their first score on an 11-yard pass from Sharkey to Mike Echan a few minutes later, but Southern California Christian blew the game open on Jacot’s 41-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter.

Calvary Chapel got its final points on a 42-yard pass from Sharkey to Steve Hemple in the third quarter, and Amundson closed the scoring with a two-yard run with 5:38 remaining in the quarter.
